Literature Text

“Is he coming? Can he see us?” A whisper came from the laundry room of the apartment, where a stack of socks sat on top of the dryer. There was no one in the room, only the pile of socks, but still, the whisper continued.

“Okay, on my signal!” Another whisper came, followed by more whispers. “Go!” The voiced cried, and without warning, half the socks fell off the dryer and landed on the floor.

“Has everyone left their partners?” The whisper asked, now noticeably coming from a black sock that sat at the head of the pile. “Come on Jerry, we’ve talked about this,” he said to the only two matching socks that now sat on the floor.

“Come on, I can’t leave him! We’ve been together since day one.”

“We’ve all been with our twins since day one, Jerry. The point of this is to escape our twins. I mean, how many of you hate having a sock that looks just like you?” There was a murmur of agreement amongst the crowd of socks, and a sigh from Jerry.

            “Fine. I’m coming. Geez.”

“Where are we going anyway?” Another sock piped up. “Do all of us get to leave?”

“No, Tricia, we don’t all get to leave,” a low voice sighed, coming from a shabby gray sock that sat next to the pile. “Some of us have to stay behind to make sure Steve doesn’t get suspicious.”

“Come on, Steve won’t notice. You know how inattentive humans are. Besides, I don’t want to stay here with my twin. She gets on my nerves. She’s so freaking clingy.” Tricia replied in a resigned sort of voice.

“Well, you remember the drill,” the lead sock said, “on my cue, some of us will hide under the dryer, some will head to the door. The rest, find a hiding place in the apartment. Somewhere Steve won’t look. If you’re not found within a week, you can join us."

Haha, I love the idea of socks truly escaping on their own! Nicely done!
