Tomorrow, April 11th, I’m going to be participating GLSEN’s National Day of Silence.

The National Day of Silence was starting in 1996 to call attention to the bullying and harassment of LGTB youth in our nations school. This will be my third year participating.

I might not be gay, lesbian, or transsexual, but I do know what it is like to be bullied to the breaking point, and I don’t think any one should have to know what that feels like. Regardless of sexual orientation, no human being should have to put up with the thing that our nation’s LGTB youth have to put up with.

I don’t care what you believe, these people deserve respect and love just as much as the next person.

So now you might be thinking “C’mon, silence won’t do anything!” The most common thing I’ve heard from people over the past years goes something like this: “You’re not doing anything if you’re just being silent.” However, if someone asks me why I’m being silent, and I reply (on a whiteboard or something similar), I have just raised awareness for the cause. So yes, I am doing something. And yes, I would willingly stand up for someone who was being bullied.

I really hope some of my friend and followers would consider participating. We need to end the silence and the pain, and remember that nothing makes us better than the next person.

“The cold river washed him away, but how  could we forget? They’re gathering some candles, but not their tongues. And too much blood has flown from the wrists of the children shamed for those they chose to kiss. Who will rise to stop the blood? We’re counting for, insisting on, a different beat, a brand new song.” – Make It Stop (September’s Children)
